Ruby Summer

This is the first post under my brand-new “Writing and Literature” label, where you can be sure to find very amateur book reviews and plenty of unsolicited advice about your reading choices.  


Basically, I read a book and then, if I like it, I’ll recommend that everyone else read it, too.  It’s not a perfect system - I don’t have a ton of time to read and I’m quite certain you all have your own preferences that don’t match mine - but I have yet to find a better one, sooOOOOOooooo… 


For today’s label-debut I offer a shameless plug for my very own book.  


After years and years (and years and years) of hobby writing, I decided to stick one little toe in the publishing pool and self-publish a short chapter book for kids.  It’s geared toward elementary and middle school readers, and loosely based on the people and events in my own life (though all names are changed for the sake of privacy, and there has been a fair amount of artistic liberty and dramatization).

 You know, like class rings, but for adults... Parenting isn't always black and white...

Sometimes it’s slimy, green, and polka-dotty…  For the last week here in central Ohio, we’ve enjoyed a regular old-fashioned snowy winter.  It started with biting, bitter cold and wind, followed by a few days of falling white stuff, and now we’re blessed with a picturesque winter wonderland of a backyard, complete with white drifts, snow-covered limbs on all of the trees, and a solidly frozen creek (in most places).   Despite being twelve and fifteen-going-on-sixteen, two of my girls grabbed sleds and headed out back to play today, like they did when they were half this age. My youngest built a mini snowman and then managed to break up some of the ice in the creek.  She dragged her “trophy” - the biggest chunk - up to the deck to display it on the railing.   The quest for that ice trophy brought back a memory from five and a half years ago.  And that’s what I’m going to share with you today. Meet Piper

By now you’ve read a good deal about me, gotten acquainted with my kids (in several posts such as this one), “met” my husband, and have enjoyed the entire life-story of Phelps, the frog (found here ).  There remains only one member of this household that I haven’t properly introduced yet, and that is our goofy, adorable, 60-pounds-of-black-sass giant schnauzer, Piper.   In honor of her “gotcha day” when we brought her home five years ago next Friday, I’ll dedicate this post to her. A little backstory first: Both my husband and I love dogs.  He grew up with a chocolate lab.  You’ve already received the rundown on my menagerie of pets (found in this post).  We knew we wanted a family dog as soon as our kids were old enough.  Once our littlest was on her feet (and less likely to crawl through puppy puddles, and able to defend herself and understand the need to be gentle) we began casually looking for a boxer mix to adopt.  I’d been perusing shelte...
